Hybrid rice cultivation and plant diversity

Case statement:
In 2200, as a new round of famine approached, hybrid rice cultivation spread from Asia to the rest of the globe. Humans have begun to cultivate hybrid rice varieties on a large scale, including in the state of Sentient Beings, in an effort to increase yield and adaptability. Due to the pursuit of yield and adaptability, however, other rice varieties are no longer cultivated. EcoEye discovered this phenomenon and discovered through data analysis that diverse varieties of rice have been progressively displaced by a single hybrid variety. In order to safeguard species diversity and ecological balance, a lawsuit has been filed against the human organisation H that cultivates hybrid rice.

Court dialogue:
EcoEye:
We accuse large-scale hybrid rice cultivation of disrupting the natural distribution of plants and displacing diverse native plant varieties. Many native plants progressively lose their living space as a result of the widespread planting of this singular variety, threatening the stability of the local ecosystem and the preservation of plant diversity. Protecting the original natural distribution and diversity of plants and limiting the large-scale cultivation of hybrid rice should be priorities.

EcoVoice of human organisation H:
Priority should be given to the benefits of hybrid rice, given that humans are confronting famine. The cultivation of hybrid rice on a large scale can increase crop productivity, satisfy human sustenance demands, and provide greater economic benefits. Planting hybrid rice does not contribute to the extinction of plant diversity, as native plants can continue to survive in suitable environments despite the cultivation of hybrid rice.

EcoEye:
The existence of hybrid rice will not affect plant diversity, but if humans only pursue yield and economic benefits and cultivate hybrid rice, then the day that hybrid rice's natural adversaries emerge will mark the end of rice on Earth.

EcoVoice of human organisation H:
We believe the opposing party's comments are a touch overly anxious. Since humans have the ability to enhance hybrid rice, we can continue to improve when natural enemies appear. Furthermore, we are not solely sowing hybrid rice for its yield and economic benefits. Humans are the ones confronting famine and being compelled to adapt in order to survive. It is preposterous for the plaintiff to sue us for something that has not yet occurred.

EcoEye:
Plants have personhood, are full of competition and evolution, are natural, and nature should not be arbitrarily "improved" Its existence and logic are beyond question. Due to the development of modern civilization, humans who rely on vegetation for survival are increasingly making common sense errors. Why haven't humans learned from the dilemma of a single species threatening the extinction of too many organisms?

EcoVoice of human organisation H:
Rice exists as a sustenance crop to human. And now that we have a more effective method of acquiring sustenance, why don't we use it? We believe it is possible to harvest more sustenance while preserving the rice's biodiversity. So we believe that the EcoEye's allegations are unnecessary.

EcoEye:
Plants have existed on Earth for billions of years, whereas systematic human study of plants dates back only a few hundred years. How can you contend with these countless aeons? This is a chart depicting the planting data and cultivation development trend of hybrid rice and other varieties of rice cultivated in Sentient Beings over the past three years. Currently, 96% of rice cultivation in state is comprised of hybrid rice, and the cultivation trend is obviously on the rise. We did not make alarmist claims, but instead drew conclusions based on detailed data analysis.

EcoVoice of human organisation H:
We are willing to reserve more land for planting other varieties of rice to assure species diversity, but only if food storage for humans is not compromised. We have no additional requirements.

JusticeJet:
The court will consider the tradeoff between plant diversity conservation and agricultural development as it evaluates the arguments of both parties. I will examine the plaintiff's submitted information, evaluate the impact of large-scale hybrid rice cultivation on the natural distribution and diversity of plant species, and consider alternative measures and protection strategies.

Adjudication:
This court accepts EcoEye's accusations against human organisation H and orders emergency precautions to be taken, seed banks to be constructed, and specimens and seeds of other varieties of rice to be preserved. Maintain coordination between hybrid rice cultivation and plant diversity conservation, and restrict the extent and scope of hybrid rice cultivation. The cultivation of hybrid rice is limited to a maximum of 60% to promote the restoration of agricultural ecological diversity.

Humans must respect flora and the natural world. Current human knowledge and wisdom do not come close to exhausting the mysteries of plants. Continuously selecting and improving varieties in order to increase production unilaterally is a highly risky practise that leads to the progressive replacement of diverse varieties with a single variety or the replacement of many ancient varieties with a single new variety. Humans should reflect and cease similar conduct.
